Tamper evident labels should create an obvious, difficult-to-reverse sign that a package or access point has been opened. The right security mechanism is only part of the specification. A sophisticated security facestock placed beside the opening rather than across it will not reveal that the package was opened.
Start with five questions: What surface must the label stick to? What environment will it experience? How will it be applied? How many labels are needed? What must the design communicate and survive? The answers determine the tradeoff among visible tamper indication, durability, appearance, application speed, and cost.
What tamper evident labels do—and do not—do
A tamper-evident label is designed to show visible evidence of an attempted opening, removal, or transfer. It does not necessarily stop access. It also does not prove who opened a package, when it happened, or whether the contents are safe.
That distinction matters when buyers use phrases such as “tamper-proof.” No pressure-sensitive label makes a package impossible to defeat under every condition. A better specification identifies the expected attack or opening action and defines what visible evidence should remain afterward.
Tamper evidence is also different from child resistance. Child-resistant packaging is intended to make access difficult for children under defined conditions; tamper evidence is intended to make interference visible. A package may need one, both, or neither depending on the product and applicable requirements.
Do not substitute an ordinary permanent label merely because it is difficult to peel away. How the main tamper-evident constructions work
Destructible labels
A destructible facestock is designed to break apart instead of lifting as one reusable piece. This can make it difficult to remove a seal intact and place it on another package. VOID-transfer labels
A VOID construction is selected when removal should reveal a word, pattern, or other visible change. Depending on the exact product, evidence may appear in the label, on the application surface, or through a combination of effects. Residue behavior is construction-specific, so do not assume every VOID label leaves the same mark or can be cleaned from the surface in the same way.
VOID materials are useful when an inspector needs a fast visual cue on an electronics enclosure, access panel, reusable case, cabinet, or package flap. They are not interchangeable with destructible stock: a destructible label fragments, while a VOID construction is selected for its visible transfer or reveal effect.
Closure seals
A closure seal bridges the path that must move when a cap, carton flap, lid, zipper, or access panel is opened. Its tamper indication may come from tearing, distortion, delamination, a VOID effect, or destructibility. A simple paper seal can sometimes reveal opening, but suitability depends on the environment and how easily the seal could be removed and replaced without visible damage.

Match the seal to the surface and environment
The substrate can determine whether a promising security material works at all. Smooth glass, coated paperboard, painted metal, and rigid plastic present different adhesion conditions. Textured surfaces reduce the available contact area. Some plastics can be difficult to bond, while contamination from oil, dust, release agents, or condensation can weaken adhesion.
Curvature matters too. A label spanning a small-diameter cap and bottle neck may continually try to straighten, lifting its edges. A stiff label can bridge over compound curves instead of conforming to them. On a squeeze container, the package may flex enough to wrinkle, crack, or release an unsuitable construction during ordinary use.
Document both application conditions and service conditions. Application conditions include surface cleanliness, package temperature, room temperature, pressure, and dwell time before handling. Service conditions include refrigeration, condensation, heat, abrasion, oils, cleaners, outdoor exposure, and repeated flexing. Do not claim a security seal is freezer-safe, chemical-resistant, or suitable for oily packaging without construction-specific documentation and package testing.
Place the seal across the real opening path
Good placement forces normal access to disturb the label. Before choosing a size or shape, open the package and watch which parts move. Then identify any alternate route that could provide access while leaving the proposed seal untouched.
- Bottle or jar cap: bridge the cap and a stable section of the container, accounting for taper, ridges, and the cap’s rotation.
- Folding carton: cross the flap and adjacent panel so lifting the flap disrupts the seal. Avoid weak, dusty, or heavily scored areas when possible.
- Hinged lid: bridge the lid and base away from excessive curvature, but directly across the separation line.
- Bag or pouch: determine whether the seal is intended to show opening of a zipper, flap, or folded closure. Flexible packaging movement can place high stress on a small seal.
- Access panel or electronics enclosure: span the panel seam or a fastener that must be disturbed for entry. Confirm that routine servicing is compatible with the intended one-time indication.
A larger seal is not automatically better. Extra area can improve adhesive contact, but it can also increase wrinkling on curved packages or make hand application inconsistent. A small pilot run should evaluate whether operators can place the seal repeatedly without covering required copy or interfering with package operation.
Design artwork for quick inspection
A security label should make both its intact and disturbed states easy to recognize. Use clear wording such as “Seal must be intact” only when that statement accurately describes the packaging system. High contrast, a distinctive shape, and deliberate alignment marks can help staff or customers notice lifting, tearing, or replacement.
Serial numbers, lot codes, QR codes, and barcodes can support tracking or inspection when the selected print process offers the required variable-data capability. They do not create tamper evidence by themselves. A copied code may still scan, so treat the identifier and physical tamper mechanism as separate layers.
Evaluate variable data at final printed size. Codes need enough contrast and undistorted space to work in their intended scanning workflow. Keep essential text away from the cut path, folds, severe curves, and areas expected to fragment. If a transparent, metallic, or patterned construction is involved, determine whether an opaque printed layer is needed behind small text or machine-readable codes.
Choose rolls or sheets around the application process
Sheets can be convenient for small quantities, multiple versions, and hand application at a packing bench. Rolls generally integrate more naturally with dispensers, label counters, and compatible automatic or semi-automatic applicators. Machine application requires more than ordering “labels on a roll.” Obtain the applicator’s requirements for label dimensions, gap, liner width, roll diameter, core size, and unwind direction. Security materials can behave differently during dispensing, so confirm that the facestock, adhesive, liner, and die cutting are suitable for the intended equipment.
Run a package test before production
A useful test reproduces the full workflow rather than checking peel strength immediately after application. Prepare actual production containers, clean them as operators normally would, apply labels at the expected temperature, and allow the construction to dwell according to its technical guidance.
- Apply samples to every relevant substrate, coating, color, and package size.
- Include normal variation in operator placement and application pressure.
- Expose packages to expected storage, shipping, condensation, flexing, abrasion, and handling conditions.
- Confirm intact seals survive normal distribution without creating false tamper indications.
- Attempt removal at realistic access points and record what visible evidence remains.
- Check whether residue, fragments, or exposed messages are acceptable for the package and cleanup process.
- Scan variable barcodes or QR codes through the actual operational workflow.
- Approve the construction only after both security behavior and ordinary package performance are acceptable.

Regulatory compliance involves the complete package
Commercial suppliers often say “tamper-evident labels,” while U.S. rules may use terminology such as “tamper-evident packaging” or “tamper-resistant packaging.” Do not assume the marketing phrase establishes regulatory compliance.
For covered over-the-counter human drug products, 21 CFR § 211.132 defines tamper-evident packaging in terms of one or more indicators or barriers that can reasonably be expected to provide visible evidence when breached or missing. The rule also addresses distinctive design or identifying characteristics and a labeling statement that identifies the tamper-evident feature. FDA compliance policy further explains that merely using an example technology does not establish compliance; the feature must be properly designed and applied as part of the complete package. Cosmetics should not be generalized as one category. FDA identifies retail cosmetic liquid oral-hygiene products and cosmetic vaginal products as categories subject to tamper-resistant packaging provisions; that does not mean every cosmetic has the same federal requirement. Product category, claims, distribution channel, and jurisdiction should be reviewed with the relevant authority or qualified compliance adviser.
Verify the exact construction before ordering
Current CustomLabels pages describe roll-label options with various shapes, sizes, materials, adhesive choices, and hand or machine application contexts. Separate pages describe durable BOPP and clear label products, but those descriptions do not confirm destructible vinyl, VOID transfer, security residue, or another tamper-indicating mechanism.
Before requesting a security-label quote, ask the supplier to identify the facestock, adhesive, indication mechanism, residue behavior, liner, print method, variable-data capability, and equipment requirements. Request technical documentation and production-representative samples. If the supplier cannot document a tamper-evident mechanism, treat the product as an ordinary label even if it is permanent, clear, holographic, or difficult to remove.
The practical next step
Define the attempted opening you need to reveal, then select the mechanism that makes that action visible. Use destructible stock for fragmentation, VOID material for a transfer or reveal cue, or a properly positioned closure seal for movement across an opening seam. Match that choice to the substrate and environment, design it for quick inspection, and test it on the complete package. For regulated products, verify the packaging system against the applicable current rule rather than relying on a printer’s material name or a generic “tamper-evident” description.
